Democracy, anarchy, and tyranny are three very different organising principles people use to make decisions, allocate resources, and define culture. There are others. Wikipedia's list of forms of government has many more.
As chair of the board of the OpenAustralia Foundation, I find myself pondering the different ways we interact with each other, and make decisions. It's all politics. I oft hear people say "I hate politics," but I love it. At high school it was one of my favourite subjects. I served on the SRC (Student Representative Council). I even studied politics at uni.
I rejoined the board in October 2024. 2025 has been a tough year of transition for our little charity. In 2026 we will see if we successfully emerge from the chrysalis.
I'll be speaking about the foundation at EverythingOpen in January.
Open Australia: Who we are, what we do, and what's in it for you.

The seed was sown in 2004 when Kat Szuminska and Matthew Landauer decided to set up a website to help Australians learn more about what their elected representatives were up to. Since then, this scrappy little charity has gone on to create and run a number of services that facilitate civic engagement. Come along to learn more about us, and how you too can help Australia be a bit more open.
