Who remembers shareware?

Once upon a time, in another century, we were exploring a tech revolution that democratised technology with the arrival of the "personal computer." From the business basement to the desktop, and on and into our pockets, computers began appearing, bit by bit, in every sphere of human endeavour.

There are some parts of the world where there are less than 50 mobile phone subscriptions per 100 people, but there are other parts that have more than 200. Think about that for a minute? It's a beautiful illustration of William Gibson's maxim "The future is here, it's just not evenly distributed."

Exploring the landscape of apps, tools, and AI enhanced platforms is exhilarating for some, and exhausting for others. Fear and frustration, skepticism, and genuine concern for ethical and environmental impacts is giving many people reason to pause and question the hype.

I find myself on the fence. Reflective and curious. Experimenting. But more cautious now, than I used to be. Perhaps I'm heeding lessons learned from past experience of rushing in too soon? Perhaps I'm wary due to hearing respected voices asking questions, as yet unanswered. Perhaps it's ok to be slow. It's ok to wait out the start of the hype cycle and let others pave the way.
